If you know in your heart that you have done everything you could to regain trust, then you have nothing to worry about. You have in fact, come out on top. All of the work you put in was not for nothing. Now, everything you do from here on out will be built on a sober, honest and trustworthy foundation.
Trust is never taken, it is always earned. Because we are unable to take or steal trust, it makes it even harder to regain. There are no shortcuts when rebuilding relationships.
How do I regain Trust in Recovery?
1. Focus on yourself
2. Avoid victim mentality
3. Build a routine and stick to it
4. Do the right thing
5. Don’t ask for praise or expect an award
6. Be impeccable with your word
7. Be consistent
Your actions will speak louder than words. Frequently, words alone will fall on deaf ears. Be patient and be transparent – it may take friends, family, co-workers time to accept that you are taking this journey of sobriety and recovery seriously. You didn’t get to this place overnight and you won’t heal overnight.
Embrace the journey and look forward.
“Finish the day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
